House Republican members in Pennsylvania have announced an upcoming legislative package aimed at combatting antisemitism in the state's education system. The move comes in response to the rise in antisemitic incidents and the need for increased measures to address this issue.

One of the key sponsors of the legislation, Rep. Aaron Kaufer, emphasized the urgency of taking action against antisemitism, stating, "Antisemitism at any level in society must be stopped, period." He highlighted the need to address antisemitism in both primary and higher education institutions.

Rep. Rob Mercuri is sponsoring a bill that would require institutions of higher education receiving state taxpayer support to recognize antisemitism and calls for the genocide of the Jewish people as bullying, harassment, and intimidation. The aim is to ensure that universities have a clear commitment to combating antisemitic behavior and explicitly denounce calls for genocide.

Another proposed legislation, put forth by Rep. Kristin Marcell, focuses on curriculum transparency in Holocaust education in schools. Marcell emphasized the importance of parents and the community knowing how the Holocaust is being taught in Pennsylvania's schools. She stated, "Teaching about the Holocaust is not just about learning history; it is about safeguarding democratic values and promoting a more just and tolerant society."

To further raise awareness about antisemitism, Rep. Joe Hogan will author a resolution declaring November 9, 2024, as Antisemitism Awareness and Education Day in Pennsylvania. This date coincides with the International Day Against Fascism and aims to highlight the real impacts of antisemitism and promote factual education about the Holocaust.

The House Republican members are committed to combating antisemitism and ensuring that Pennsylvania's education system addresses this issue effectively. The legislative package seeks to promote transparency, education, and awareness to eradicate antisemitism in schools and universities.
